A newsletter for the Tierrasanta community

April 25th, 2023

Welcome to the 3rd edition of the new Tierrasanta Newsletter, a.k.a. “92124.news”!

This newsletter is produced and published by the Tierrasanta Foundation, but it is the many contributors from all over the community that make the newsletter work. If you or your organization (or your church, team, club, etc.) has anything going on or anything to say to the community, then please submit your articles and photos by email to newsletter@tierrasantafoundation.org. FYI, the next newsletter publishes on June 27th and articles are due June 20th.

It’s springtime in T-Town and a bunch of events and activities are coming up soon. May 20th is Tierrafest which includes an Arts & Crafts Fair, the Patriots Day Parade, and then the Armed Forces Day fireworks at night. Ascension Church brings back Fiesta (for the first time since 2019) on June 2, 3 and 4. Then starting July 8th the TCC plans a series of SIX Concerts in the Park every Saturday evening through August 12th. The following Saturday, on August 19, is the return of the Bocce Ball tournament, and after that is the return of Oktoberfest on Oct 14th.

Closing out the year is the Tierrasanta 5k, the first T-Town 5k since COVID. This is a chip-timed sanctioned 5k race, plus a casual fun run and walk for all ages: kids, baby strollers and dogs are invited. Halloween costumes are welcome because this event is the Saturday before Halloween, on October 28th. Prizes to the best costumes in a variety of categories. After the run stick around for the 5k’s beer garden, which is free to anyone wearing a runners bib. You can sign-up for the 5k NOW.

The Tierrasanta Foundation currently is engaged in THREE ongoing infrastructure projects that serve to benefit the community:

  1. Tierrasanta Foundation’s new “Fix the Rec” project intends to support the Tierrasanta Recreation Center and Swimming Pool with upgrades that the city can’t afford right now. We have grant funds from the County of San Diego that we intend to spend on things that will improve these important facilities, and are also looking to raise matching funds from community members like you! You can read more about it and contribute here.

  2. Fire Station 39 Replacement: Tierrasanta Foundation is working on or has completed fire station landscape improvements at fire stations throughout the city (mostly using grant funds from non-Tierrasanta sources): station 39 in Tierrasanta, station 12 in Lincoln Park, station 5 in Hillcrest and station 29 in San Ysidro. The fire fighters themselves are responsible for maintaining the landscape of their fire station, but in all these cases the landscape was not well maintained and it was not at all suited to the recent water restrictions imposed by the city. We leveraged the generosity of a landscape designer, a professional landscaper, and multiple vendors who donated plants and materials in order to renew the landscaping to be more drought-tolerant and to require less maintenance. Tierrasanta Foundation is working this initiative because we believe this work eventually will lead to the City of San Diego making a new fire station 39 a budget reality in the near future.

  3. Tierrasanta Community Banners: This program is basically complete, but in 2021 Tierrasanta Foundation paid to put up a bunch of banners on our major boulevards in recognition of the community’s 50th anniversary. We hope you noticed them! The red Tierrasanta banner is a replica of the 1996 banners that were put up in recognition of the community’s 25th anniversary, and these banners stayed up for 10 or 15 years before they wore out and had to be taken down. In 2022 we put up some added banners, including five new banners recognizing the skateboarder Tony Hawk who grew up in Tierrasanta. These new vinyl banners won’t last as long as the 1996 fabric banners, so be sure to enjoy them while you can! Scroll down for images of the new banners.

If you want to know more about what Tierrasanta Foundation does or would like to help with the 5K event, please contact me at president@tierrasantafoundation.org.

The 7 Wonders of Tierrasanta

By Joseph Guerin

Having lived in Tierrasanta for nearly 30 years now, I’ve taken it upon myself to make a list of the Seven Wonders of Tierrasanta. Yes, the list is inspired by the Seven Wonders of the World, which are man-made objects. My list of local wonders are mostly man- and woman-made, and one entry is actually a man.

This list is certainly not definitive. I hope you will submit your Wonders of Tierrasanta. My email contact will be at the end of the article. Please send me your entries and I will include them in an upcoming newsletter.

The purpose of the list is to bring attention to the many wonderful things and places that make Tierrasanta (T-Town) such a great place to live.

OK, so here goes (and keep in mind, this is not in any particular order):

  • The Community Garden behind Tierrasanta Lutheran Church. This gem is tucked away but is worth a visit. The folks who maintain it obviously take great pride in their gardens.

  • Shepherd Canyon - East & West. The trail that cuts through the canyon offers delights around every bend. A terrific place to take a stroll through nature.

  • The Tierrasanta Rec Center. Ballfields, basketball and tennis courts, children’s playground, swimming pool, meeting rooms. Such a wonderful place.

  • The Stairway to Hell (hey, that’s what it’s labeled on Google maps) at Clairemont Mesa and Antigua boulevards. Looking for a quick, free workout? Here you go.

  • The Top of The T. Just a short walk from the end of Corte Playa Catalina is a spot that offers incredible westerly views.

  • The Belardo Lights. The annual Christmas holiday extravaganza is truly a wonder.

  • Mr. Tony Hawk. The legendary skateboarder spent formative years in T-Town and attended Farb Middle School.

OK, that’s my list. Feel free to let me know what you think. I know there are plenty of other T-Town Wonders. What are your nominations?

Contact me at guerin_joe@yahoo.com.

Tierrasanta Little League Opening Day was a big success!

Baseball players, families and friends gathered for a fun filled day of games, food and baseball events. Thanks to all that participated. Pictured; Kids and teams gather for Opening Day festivities.

Home Run Derby Winners

This year TLL partnered with Major League Baseball’s- Junior Home Run Derby contest. This is an official event where players showcase their hitting skills and compete against their peers to earn a spot at the National Finals. The finals take place during the 2023 MLB All-Star Week. This year’s local winners are Benjamin Perez in the 12 & Under age group, who hit 4 Home Runs, and Tank Thomas in the 14 & Under age group with 10 Home Runs hit.

Benjamin Perez is a 6th grader at DePortola Middle School. Ben started playing baseball when he was 5 years old with Tecolote Canyon then moved over to Tierrasanta Little League in the 1st grade. He says the best thing about playing baseball is, “Everything!” Ben is an outstanding student/athlete that also plays Basketball, runs Track & field and is a member of the middle school Volleyball team, did we also mention he’s a 4.0 student? Wow. Keep up the great work Ben! We wish you all the best in the regional competition and beyond!

Tank Thomas is an 8th grader at DePortola Middle School. Tank is looking forward to playing baseball in High School. Tank is an outstanding athlete that also plays football. Lucky for us, Tank says Baseball is his favorite sport. We had the opportunity to catch up with Tank and ask him what he likes the most about playing for TLL, “I get the chance to play baseball with all of my friends from school and it’s a lot of fun!” Thanks for being a part of our community Tank!

Both boys have advanced to the regional competition to be held in the upcoming months. We wish them the best of luck as they look to earn a trip to MLB All-Star week in Seattle!

Recent Events at Hancock Elementary

Purple up! April is the month of the Military Child. Hancock celebrated in many ways. One week in April was Hancock Hero Spirit Week. Many students participated by wearing Military shirts to support their branch of the military on one day and the next day wear red, white and blue. The next three days students and staff wore camouflage, they also wore purple and on the last day their favorite superhero. The reason students wore purple was because it is the color that is used to represent the military child. On April 13th, some of our parents who are serving in the military, came to support the military children by welcoming students into the school with high fives and hello waves. After students entered, they could hear the US Navy Brass Quintet performing various songs to celebrate our Purple Up day. On April 14th, students participated in our Hancock Physical Education Boot Camp. There were volunteer military personnel in charge of different sections of our book camp. Volunteers showed students how to do each station and students were filled with so much excitement that they could not wait to get started on their Boot Camp activities. Each grade went through and did various activities that involved improving their running, jumping, and hurdling skills. They also tried their fancy footwork on ladders and hula hoops. As the day ended, students were given a purple goody bag to thank our military youth for their strength and sacrifices.

Buckle Up! Hancock Elementary Foundation has helped fund classes to go on field trips. Many classes have already taken field trips or will be taking them in the next couple of months. Some of the field trips that some classes have already booked are trips to the San Diego Zoo, Birch Aquarium, Old Town, and Living Coast. Some experiences are being booked and students do not need to buckle up because some of these programs will be coming to Hancock Elementary in the next couple weeks. These experiences will have students from different grades gather in the auditorium and attend assemblies like RH Fleet presentations which support science and math, Literature Comes to Life which supports reading, and some classes even got to meet the comic book author, Lucas Turnbloom. He talked to students about how he comes up with ideas for writing a comic book and developing characters. Then he did a sketching activity with them where they created a unique cartoon sketch. Students loved the idea and practiced along with him. They all wanted him to check out their wonderful drawings and they continued to share their drawings with classmates and teachers.

TVSD Presentation Open to the Community

Tierrasanta Village of San Diego (TVSD) is hosting the following presentation. Community members are welcome to attend this event.

Fall Prevention & Introduction to ElderHelp Services
Monday, May 8th
1:00 – 2:30 p.m.

More than one in four people 65 and older falls each year, and over 3 million are treated in emergency departments annually for fall injuries. There are simple steps you can take to prevent falls and avoid potentially devastating injuries.

Join village members on May 8th to hear from Carrie McClellan, the Outreach Manager for ElderHelp, a local nonprofit organization that supports seniors in San Diego. Carrie will explain the many risk factors for falling and share ways to improve strength, balance and how to make your home safer.

Village members participate in Tierrasanta’s annual Patriot’s Day Parade.

ElderHelp is dedicated to improving the lives of seniors and their families. Carrie will discuss the personalized services and information that ElderHelp provides to help seniors remain independent in their own homes, such as shared housing, transportation, grocery shopping assistance, minor home repairs, and more. In addition, she will provide information about how to stay active and involved through volunteer opportunities available.

This event is free, open to the public, and is also available online via Zoom. (Masks are encouraged).

Seating is limited. RSVP to tierrasantavlg@gmail.com or 858-569-9119 to receive the event address, parking instructions or the Zoom meeting link.

Tierrasanta Village works to connect members to the many practical support services available in the county and to promote staying active. Ultimately, these two goals of the Village allow members to live in their current homes as long as possible. To learn more about the Village approach to healthy aging, visit the Tierrasanta Village booth at the Craft Fair in the New Break Church parking lot on May 20th. Or attend the next informational happy hour on Tuesday, May 23rd. Tierrasanta residents age 50+ are eligible to join.

City Publishes 2024 Annual Report for the Tierrasanta Maintenance Assessment District

The City of San Diego has published the 2024 Annual Report for the Tierrasanta Maintenance Assessment District (MAD). Residents familiar with the history of the MAD in Tierrasanta will know this report as an Assessment Engineer’s Report. The title was changed in 2017.

Its dry reading at best but it does provide some important details as to how our various parcels are assessed. The proposed 2024 budget can be found on Page 2. A fuller discussion to include additional funding sources and anticipated expenses can be found as Exhibit B. Note that our assessments were raised 7.29%. The maximum authorized assessment rates are cost-indexed and will increase (or decrease) annually based on the annual change in the San Diego Consumer Price Index for Urban Consumers

The total cost associated with District improvement and activities will be assessed to the various parcels in the District in proportion to the estimated Equivalent Benefit Units (EBUs) assigned to a parcel in relationship to the total EBUs of all the parcels in the District.

EBUs for each parcel have been determined as a function of three factors, a Land Use Factor, a Benefit Factor, and a Location Factor, related as shown in the following equation:

EBUs = (Acres or Units) x Land Use Factor x Benefit Factor x Location Factor

Each of these factors, Land Use, Benefit and Location, is discussed and developed in the report. Here is a link for those interested in learning more.

Register for Tierrasanta’s Annual Father-Daughter Dance

Hosted by local Girl Scout Troop 3871

As we gear up for our annual Father-Daughter Dance, we are thrilled to announce this year's theme: an elegant night featuring a Breakfast at Tiffany's theme. The event will take place on May 5th from 6:30 - 8:30 pm, and promises to be a memorable evening for fathers and daughters alike.

Inspired by the classic Audrey Hepburn film, we invite you to dress up in your finest attire and join us for a night of sophistication and glamour. From the moment you enter the venue, you will be transported to the world of Holly Golightly and the iconic Tiffany & Co. store.

Our talented Girl Scout event planners have been working hard to create a sophisticated and enchanting atmosphere. We will use a color scheme reminiscent of Tiffany blue hues, with elegant black and white accents. Simple but elegant decorations like balloons, streamers, and table centerpieces will help set the mood.

Throughout the night, you and your daughter will have the opportunity to enjoy various activities and entertainment. Take a spin on the dance floor to classic tunes from the 1950s and 60s, enjoy delicious snacks and desserts, and take part in photo ops to capture memories to last a lifetime.

Of course, no Breakfast at Tiffany's themed event would be complete without a touch of luxury. We will be raffling off a range of items that will be exciting and fun, such as gift baskets filled with fun items and gift cards to local businesses.

Most importantly, this event celebrates the special bond between fathers and daughters. We believe that spending quality time with our loved ones is one of life's greatest pleasures, and we are honored to be a part of this special night.

So mark your calendars for May 5th, and prepare for an elegant and enchanting evening. We can't wait to see you there! To register visit: https://forms.gle/FjyL1GbSY81iwsB67
