Advertising Guidelines for Paid Advertisements in 92124.NEWS

Welcome to 92124.NEWS! Our mission is to create a publication that not only informs and engages but also reflects the essence and interests of the Tierrasanta community. To ensure that paid advertisements align with our vision and meet the expectations of our readers, we have established the following guidelines:

1. Relevance: Advertisements should directly cater to the interests and needs of our community members, with a focus on promoting Tierrasanta businesses and services. Products, services, or events advertised should resonate with our readers' local context and preferences.

2. Accuracy: Advertisements must uphold truthfulness and accuracy. Claims regarding products or services must be substantiated with evidence, and any endorsements or testimonials must be authentic.

3. Respectfulness: We embrace the diversity within our community and expect advertisements to reflect this respect. Content must avoid any form of discrimination, offense, or provocation.

4. Transparency: To maintain transparency, advertisements must be clearly distinguishable from editorial content. They should be prominently labeled as "Advertisement" or "Sponsored Content."

5. Legality: Advertisements must comply with all relevant laws and regulations, including those governing consumer protection, advertising standards, and intellectual property rights.

6. Visual Standards: Advertisements should maintain a professional appearance and adhere to fundamental design principles. They should steer clear of clutter, misleading visuals, or anything that detracts from clarity.

7. Size and Format: Advertisements should be submitted in the specified size and format outlined in our advertising guidelines. Any deviations must be discussed with our editorial team in advance.

8. Submission Deadlines: Advertisements must be submitted by the specified deadlines, as listed on the Tierrasanta Foundation’s website, to guarantee inclusion in upcoming newsletter issues. Late submissions will not be accommodated.

9. Approval Process: All advertisements undergo thorough review and approval by our editorial team. We reserve the right to reject or request modifications to any advertisement that falls short of our standards or contradicts the values of our publication.

10. Editorial Independence: Advertisements have no bearing on editorial content or decision-making processes. Our editorial team exercises complete independence and discretion in shaping the content of the newsletter.

By choosing to advertise with us, you acknowledge and agree to adhere to these guidelines. We greatly appreciate your support and collaboration in maintaining the caliber of our community publication.

For inquiries or advertisement submissions, please contact our publisher at president@tierrasantafoundation.org. Please mention "Ad Content" in the subject line.

SFU (student financial understanding club)

Our club aims to teach students financial literacy to better prepare them for life after high school. Many students struggle with financial stability due to a lack of knowledge about saving and responsible spending. We focus on skills like investing and saving to help students avoid debt and low-income situations. We're expanding our reach within the community and have gained recognition from international organizations for our members' achievements in financial literacy competitions. To reinforce learning, we organize a month-long simulation/competition where students use fake currency to invest in scenarios like the stock market and savings. The participant with the most money at the end wins a prize, currently set at $100. We recently had a guest speaker, Mary Taylor, a representative at SDSU who often gives lectures about financial literacy to schools across the district. When she came to present to our club, she stressed the importance of starting early and learning to invest and save now to be prepared for the financial responsibilities of college and adulthood, points that we emphasize to our members from then on.”

Women in STEM

The Canyon Hills High School Women in STEM Club, in partnership with Scientella, empowers young women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Claire Ritchie, a junior at CHHS and the club’s co-founder and co-president says that her goal of Women in STEM is to “ ensure young women's voices are heard in STEM by providing hands-on research projects with industry leaders like Illumina and Resmed, as well as volunteering and cultivating general curiosity through the resources we have”. Through career exploration activities and guest speakers, they foster a safe space where members can thrive and inspire one another.

Canyon Hills Academic League

Academic League is a trivia style club where students from all grade levels compete in competitions against other schools answering high school level questions with subjects including Literature, Math, Science, History, Pop culture, and more. Answering correctly earns your team points with the goal of beating the other team. I’d like to say we’re making a difference in our school by getting more students engaged in Academic League. We’ve grown as a club significantly in the last 2 years and we’ve improved greatly in our matches. Academic league has become very distinguished and respected as a club that helps students with getting recognized by colleges along with how well the players have done in these trivia based competitions. “What I like about academic league is that there’s subjects that are suited for everyone. Everyone on the team has something they exceed in, I love history and movies so that’s generally what I get right and thrive at.”(Sebastian Sharpless-Senior)

Friends of Tierrasanta Canyons

Thank you to our new volunteers and Newbreak Church for working in East Shepherd Canyon on March 9. We had 37 volunteers, ranging in age from the “just starting to walk” to the "maybe I should slow down a bit." We estimate at least 1,000 lbs of invasive myoporum and acacia plants were removed.

Our cleanup on April 20 will be from 9 am to 12 noon. Our site is participating in the countywide Creek to Bay event being led by I Love A Clean San Diego. Registration opens on April 1st at www.cleansd.org/creek-to-bay/ Our Tierrasanta site may be listed under East County, not San Diego Central. There is a cap of 25 volunteers. We will have waivers onsite. Volunteers under 18 years of age will need a parent or legal guardian to sign their waiver. If you have questions about our specific site, email us at friendsoftscanyons@gmail.com.

Meet at the East Shepherd kiosk located southeast of the intersection of Santo Road and Antigua Blvd. Street parking is available west of the intersection on Antigua Blvd. Volunteers are requested to wear long pants, long sleeves, hats, closed toe footwear, and bring work gloves and water to stay hydrated. The Friends will provide the necessary tools. Masks are optional.

The next cleanups are May 11 and June 8.

If you are concerned about the brush near your home, the City of San Diego offers expedited Right of Entry Permits at no charge. This is for homeowners wishing to hire a contractor or to perform brush clearing work themselves on City property adjacent to their home. For more information, visit the City of San Diego at https://www.sandiego.gov/park-and-recreation/parks/osp/brush. Tierrasanta Foundation’s "Fix the Rec" Initiative in 2024

Tierrasanta is fortunate to boast a well-utilized Recreation Center alongside an exceptional Community Pool. In 2023, the Tierrasanta Foundation launched the "Fix the Rec" initiative to revitalize these vital facilities. During the summer swim season, we invested $7,000 in new equipment for the Tierrasanta Pool, including upgraded chairs and umbrellas. In September, we collaborated with the City Parks and Recreation department to procure a new set of basketball backboards for the indoor gym, a significant enhancement at a cost of nearly $8,000.

As we move into 2024, our aim is to further expand the Fix the Rec program by working closely with the Pool and Rec Center staff and management. We've initiated assessments to identify additional needs and opportunities for improvement, such as installing new windows at the pool building and acquiring a new gym divider. Additionally, we're exploring the possibility of introducing more accessible chairs at the Rec Center, catering to the needs of seniors, children, and individuals with mobility challenges.

With the generous financial support from the County of San Diego through a Community Enhancement grant, collaboration with the Tierrasanta Recreation Council, fundraising efforts, and contributions from private sources, we aspire to broaden our positive impact on the Tierrasanta community.

We're genuinely enthusiastic about this program and encourage Tierrasantans to share suggestions and contribute their time or resources. If you're interested in joining our efforts, please reach out to Arne Knudsen at aknudsen@tierrasantafoundation.org or call 858-775-8751. Together, let's make Tierrasanta an even better place to live, work, and play.

Local Tierrasanta Resident on the Password Game Show

If your birthday is Dec. 25, you automatically deserve something extra special for Christmas. For Donnie Smith, a long-time resident of Tierrasanta, got her early present for 2023 by competing on network television on one of her favorite game shows.

Password, the venerable word game that involves guessing a secret word through one-word clues, debuted in 1961 with Allen Ludden as the host and has been revived several times through the decades.

The current version, which recently was renewed for a second season, is executive-produced by Fallon. Hosted by Keke Palmer and starring Jimmy Fallon, it also features Meghan Trainor and Jon Cryer as celebrity guests.

Smith, who was born at 5:45 a.m. on Dec. 25, 1957, recalls how her parents always made her birthday feel special, even in the midst of holiday festivities.

An avid singer, choir director and musician, Smith was singing “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” in the hair and makeup room when someone noticed her voice. At Trainor’s invitation, Smith wound up singing “Jingle Bells” during the taping and got the audience to participate at the end. A portion of her performance can be seen on the episode.

Now retired, Smith moved to San Diego in 1980, but she identifies herself on the show as being from Detroit, which remains her home in her heart. ”Oh, you better believe it! Detroit will always be my home. When I go to Detroit and visit, I always drive the old neighborhoods,” she says.

Tierrasanta Boulevard will be Repaved

Councilmember Campillo worked with staff to prioritize efforts to return Tierrasanta Blvd to good shape following trenching for water and sewer line construction. City Council voted in March to allocate $1.27 million to repave Tierrasanta Blvd, which will fund a full overlay rather than a standard slurry seal repair. Tierrasantans can expect the road to be repaved in late Spring or early Summer.

Visions and Goals

What does the future have in store for Tierrasanta? Your Community Council (TCC) has some ideas. The TCC has a catalogue of ongoing and possible items. It's now time to update the catalogue. The Visions and Goals Committee will meet later this spring to consider additions. Everyone is invited to review the catalogue and submit ideas to enhance Tierrasanta. Please send them to Bob Lang: langteam@aol.com. Here is a link to the catalogue:
