A Great Tierrasanta Summer and a Fun Fall Lineup

Welcome to the 5th edition of our 92124.news community newsletter! Our aim is to connect the Tierrasanta community in a new way while honoring our past with a mission inspired by the Tierra Times. We strive to Inform, Connect, & Engage the Tierrasanta community by featuring content submitted by its residents, community organizations, elected officials, schools, clubs, and other contributors who shape our Island in the Hills.

As summer winds down in Tierrasanta we hope you had a chance to enjoy some of our great community activities. The concerts in the park were a huge success this year with 6 great weeks of shows. The Canyon Hills Bocce Ball tournament just wrapped up last weekend, and the Ascension Fiesta in June is always a good time.

Looking forward to the fall we have some great events. There’s a cornhole tournament at the Lutheran church at the end of September, the Tierrasanta Oktoberfest on October 14th, and the Tierrasanta “Monster Mash” 5k on October 28th. The 5k registration is open now, you can sign up for the timed event or just a fun walk/run followed by the famous beer garden. You can keep up on all the community events by looking at our community calendar.

While the weather is still warm, be sure to stop by the Tierrasanta Community Pool and check out the new beach chairs and umbrellas! These were donated by the Tierrasanta Foundation as part of our “Fix the Rec” initiative. These new items replaced some very old, worn out equipment, and they’re a great addition to our community pool. We’re in the process of getting some new basketball backboards installed at the rec center, so keep an eye out for those upgrades this fall.

We are excited about the projects and initiatives lined up for the Tierrasanta community, and we encourage your active participation and support. Together, we can make Tierrasanta an even better place to live, work, and thrive.

If you want to know more about what Tierrasanta Foundation does or would like to help with the 5K event, please contact me at president@tierrasantafoundation.org.

Apply Now to Supervisor Anderson’s Internship Program

By Blake Togerson

With school back in session, Supervisor Joel Anderson is seeking motivated high school and college students to apply to his award-winning internship program at the County of San Diego.

Positions are available at his El Cajon District Office as well as the County Administration Center in Downtown San Diego. With flexible scheduling that can be tailored to accommodate school, work, and prior commitments, Anderson’s internship is the perfect opportunity whether you are taking your first step into the professional world or building upon your existing skillset before entering the workforce.

“Prior to discovering this internship, if you told me I will be provided with a platform to explore my passion of public policy and build my resume to this extent at just 17 years old, I certainly would not believe you,” expressed Savir, a current intern for the Second District Supervisor.

Interns will be given a wide range of responsibilities including essential office tasks, policy research, constituent correspondence, working with government agencies, research projects, aiding in community outreach programs, public speaking, attending community events on behalf of the Supervisor, networking with business leaders and elected officials, and presenting certificates of recognition. Interns may also work with the media department to research, write, and submit articles to local newspapers and publications. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals to get involved in the public policy process, develop job skills, and get a head-start in their career.

“Interns are the backbone of my office,” Supervisor Anderson shared. “Our interns do not make coffee runs; they play an integral role in serving my constituents, lead their own community projects, and develop life-long skills along the way.”

The program requires a 125 hour commitment that can be completed at the student’s desired pace. The office is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and interns also have the opportunity to attend early morning, evening, and weekend events along with various training sessions held throughout the year.

Once completed, interns are eligible for a letter of recommendation and certificate of recognition from Supervisor Anderson himself. This program may also fulfill your community service and internship requirements.

Students from all schools and areas of study are welcome and encouraged to apply.

To learn more and apply for Supervisor Joel Anderson’s internship program, visit SupervisorJoelAnderson.com/intern. You can also contact Internship Coordinator Michelle Surakhanova at michelle.surakhanova@sdcounty.ca.gov or (619) 860-9623.

Tierrasanta Junior Women's Club celebrates CHHS Scholarship Winners

TJWC Awards Scholarships to Canyon Hills graduates
By:  Joyce Muinos, Scholarship Chairperson

Photo L-R: Barby Gengelbach (TJWC) Brooke Turner, Daniela Peregrino, Marissa Sheehy, Joyce Muinos (TJWC) Mick Tartaglia ( donor)

Navaeh Salas (shown with Joyce Muinos) received her award at a later date. She will be attending San Diego State University.

Each year, the Tierrasanta Junior Women’s Club awards six scholarships to deserving young ladies graduating from Canyon Hills High School.  The ladies are invited to a Reception in their honor, held at the home of a member.

On July 13th, 2023, three of the awardees, along with parents and family, joined TJWC members at Amy Hall’s home for a celebration that included hors d’oeuvres, beverages, a celebratory cake, lots of socializing, laughs and photos!

Each of the scholarship winners shared her plans and talked about her experience with volunteering at CHHS and what the financial help meant to her as she prepares for college life.

Brooke Turner attended with her dad, John and her mom, Heather.  She is headed to California Polytechnic in San Luis Obispo and will be majoring in Liberal Studies.

Daniela Peregrino  will attend San Diego State with a major in Sociology & Political Science.

Marissa Sheehy brought her mom, Dana Rowland, to share her moment.  Marissa will be attending the University of California, San Diego.  She is “undeclared,” currently, but leaning toward Physical Sciences.

TJWC would like to thank Mr.  Mick Tartaglia and Mr. Jim Poole for their continued support of the Canyon Hills Scholarship Program.  Mick was on-hand to deliver the Janice Trantham Memorial Scholarship.  Jim, who helps fund  the Carol Poole Memorial Award, moved back east a few years ago and can no longer attend the reception.

The reception is an opportunity for the TJWC members to personally meet & socialize with someone who benefits from the organization’s donations. The Tierrasanta TierraFest and Oktoberfest are major fundraisers for the organization, but many smaller events are held throughout the year to fund the scholarships along with regular donations to school groups,  sports teams, Tierrasanta Rec Center and Library along with local causes like Rachel House Night Shelter, The Burrito Boys, Promises2Kids and others.

Unable to attend the reception, two winners received their checks at Villa Monserate Park. Seated, left - right: Cameron Abbott, will be attending UC Merced and Lindsay Galvan, who will attend UC Vera Cruz . Standing: Joyce Muinos, TJWC

Tierrasanta Residents Receive Lifetime Service Awards

Three original members of the Tierrasanta Foundation were recognized with Tierrasanta Lifetime Service Awards at the first of this year’s Concerts in the Park on July 8, 2023.

Lee Campbell was a founder member of the Tierrasanta Foundation in 2008, and he was the long-time Commercial Director on the Tierrasanta Community Council (TCC). Lee was responsible for the Tierrasanta Community Calendars from 2006 to about 2012, and also in part for the photo contests that selected the photos for the calendar’s pages. About 20 years ago he independently built and installed the solar powered lights that illuminate our Tierrasanta monuments in the medians of Tierrasanta Blvd, Clairemont Mesa Blvd and Santo Road Lee at the entrances of the community, and to this day he still maintains them. Lee was Grand Marshall (a.k.a. “Grand Marshmallow”) of the Tierrasanta Patriots Day Parade in May 2009. He has been a decades-long community volunteer in many areas, and he has been instrumental in promoting local businesses and enlisting their support for events and causes.

Lifetime Service Awards presented at July 8, 2023:

L-R, John Farmer, (posthumously) accepted by his wife, Bryce and daughter, Michelle,Jan Whitacre, TCC past president, Lee Campbell, Joyce Muinos, Eric Germain and John Sperrazzo, 2023 Concerts in the Park, Chairperson, TCC.

Joyce Muinos joined the Tierrasanta Foundation in 2008 and has served as TF’s President and as Secretary. After the successful 50th Anniversary Party in 2021, that resulted from the collaboration of many Tierrasanta community groups, she led the effort to create an informal cross-organization body to exchange schedules and ideas and to promote each organization’s community events. The Tierrasanta Community Partners, which she chairs, now has members from civic organizations, churches, school foundations & local businesses across Tierrasanta. Joyce is a long-time member and past president of the Tierrasanta Junior Women’s Club (TJWC), where she has worked at every TierraFest and Oktoberfest for the last three decades, and she is a member of the Tierrasanta Village of San Diego (TVSD). She was this year’s Grand Marshall of the Tierrasanta Patriots Day Parade held last May.

Eric Germain was the founding President of the Tierrasanta Foundation, a body he created with the vision of a new non-profit organization focused on improving public infrastructure in ways that benefit the entire community. Over the years TF has put on events including Taste of Tierrasanta (2008, 09, 10, 13), Tierrasanta at the Oscars (2010, 11, 12), Tierrasanta Fun Run (2011, 12), Tierrasanta 5k (2013, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19), Christmas in Tierrasanta (2014, 15, 19) and the Old Time Rock’n’Roll Party (2015, 16, 17). The proceeds from these events were used to pay for the Community Bandstand at the Rec Center (2012-13), two community benches (2015), the new landscaping at Fire Station 39 (2019) and the community banners on many of the street light poles (2021-22). TF also contributed to the installation of a doggie drinking fountain at the Rec Center (2018). Prior to TF he served as President of the TCC from 2004 to 2008, and he was the founding Treasurer of TVSD where he secured them their status as a 501c3 non-profit public charity. Eric is a co-founder of the Tierrasanta Social Club (TSC) that’s currently preparing for a 13th year of the Tierrasanta football pool.

TierraCanyon All Star Softball Team Wraps Up an Amazing Season

As a season filled with determination, heart, and commitment comes to a close, the TierraCanyon 12U All Star team sets a new standard for excellence on and off the field. Their record of 26-10-1 reflected the grit, dedication, and determination required to achieve that feat. The girls attended over 40+ practices led by manager Keith Harrison and their coaches Jesse Avery, Whitney Burns, Eric Giannettino. They participated in 6 local All Star tournaments and extended their season and competed in States and Regionals. The girls played with heart and for their teammates and community, so much so that they opted to not have a team name and strictly go by TC.

TC brought home two championships (Tournament Del Sol and PYSL’s Cool Breeze) through the season. Their fight through Districts qualified them for States in Lancaster, CA where they battled through the sweltering heat against 40 other teams from Southern California. They placed 5th overall out of 23, which propelled them to qualify for Regionals, making them the first team in their district to qualify for Regionals/Cal State Games, where they would battle against the best teams from all over the West Region! They ended their incredibly successful season tying for 3rd place. During these two major tournaments, the girls scored nearly 60 runs, through both a power and short game, while also showcasing great defensive plays: turning double plays, pickoffs, and throwing out runners on the basepaths. The TC pitchers fiercely held opposing teams to less than three earned runs for over three-quarters of their games.

Congratulations to Jaylyn Avery, Olivia Blaine, Erica Giannettino, Lexi Harrison, Bella Lively, Harmony MacDonald, Avery Maddox, KP Polick, Addie Shea, Rylie Storm, Grace Tata, Ariah Washington, and the 12U coaches for an exceptional season!

Tierrasanta Little League is excited to kick off our Fall Baseball Season

Over 100 participants will begin practices and clinics later this month. Our Minors, Majors and Juniors divisions will also play games within District 33. The season runs through November 19th, and focuses on learning to play new positions, fine tuning skills, and HAVING FUN!

Pictured above; Players from our Juniors Division begin practicing for their fall season.

On August 31, 2023 Tierrasanta Little League will elect new Board Members and re-elect those members seeking additional terms. WE NEED YOU! If you are able to volunteer your time in any way, we have a role for you. Board Member vacancies that need to be filled are VP-Upper Division, VP- Lower Division, and Umpire in Charge. We also need assistance with smaller roles such as coordinating our snack bar volunteer schedule, helping boost sponsorship and ordering uniforms for upcoming seasons. Please join us August 31,2023 at 6pm in the Tierrasanta Rec Center Meeting Rooms and find out how you can help. Pictured below left to right; Cheryl Marshall, Mel Espinosa, Aryn Rannazzisi, Lydia DiCola & Ann Bushard

With our current Board of Directors terms coming to an end, Tierrasanta Little League would like to recognize the hard work and dedication of two of our key members as they move on to their future endeavors; Mrs. Aryn Rannazzisi and Mrs. Lydia DiCola.

Aryn has been a volunteer in our league for the past 5 years. Most recently serving multiple roles as Vice President of our Upper Division and Umpire in Charge. In these roles Aryn is often the liaison between our Managers/Coaches and our Governing Board, Umpires and District. She is always willing to listen and provide a calm resolve. She has spent many seasons giving of herself for the greater good of our program. She shows patience and kindness to everyone and has remained focused on getting kids on the ball field to have fun! Aryn has provided tremendous value to our league and she will be sorely missed. Aryn will still be found supporting local baseball and cheering on her son as he begins his Senior year of Canyon Hills Rattler Baseball. Thank you for everything Aryn!

Lydia DiCola has been an active TLL Board member for the past 3 years. Officially, she is our Board Secretary, but as many of you know, her time and dedication to our league extends way beyond this role. Lydia’s next-level organizational skills have assisted in the growth of our program, coordination of events and allowed us to successfully facilitate our program. Even more remarkable, she does it with a smile on her face! Lydia and her family have relocated out of state and we wish them all the best in their next chapter. Thank you Lydia, we will miss you!

If you would like additional information on our programs or would like to volunteer, please visit our website TierrasantaLittleLeague.org. Play Ball!

Taking the heat to help our canyon

Friends of Tierrasanta Canyons, Newbreak Church helps the Friends

The August 12 habitat restoration event had a great turnout with 39 volunteers, of which 28 were from the Newbreak Church. We removed acacia, creeping myoporum, euc saplings, and trash in East Shepherd Canyon. The creeping myroporum is a ground cover that likely came from a nearby landscaping. Please try to plant natives in your yard or garden. Nonnatives disrupt our local environment and can be a source of fuel during fires.

On October 7, we will work from 8 to 11 am in East Shepherd Canyon to continue removal of acacia. Meet near the southwest corner of Avenida Playa Veracruz and Antigua Blvd. Street parking available on Avenida Playa Veracruz. RSVP by October 6 at friendsoftscanyons@gmail.com.

We ask for RSVPs to ensure we bring enough supplies. Volunteers are requested to wear long pants, long sleeves, hats, and closed toe footwear. We also recommend bringing work gloves and a refillable water bottle. The Friends will provide tools and water for refilling your water bottle. Masks are optional. If you are less than 18 years of age, an adult will need to sign the waiver form upon arrival. Community service documentation is available. Next clean-ups will be on November 11 and December 9. There is no clean-up in September.
