The Tierrasanta Foundation: Building Community Strength Together

Can you believe another year is ending? From Concerts in the Park to the Patriot’s Day Parade and the Tierrasanta 5K Fun Run, to name a few, 2023 was a banner year.

We had a record-breaking 5K Monster Mash 5K that saw a record number of participants at an all-time high. And, thanks to a generous grant from County Supervisor Joel Anderson, we provided much-needed replacement backboards at the Rec Center and new pool chairs at our Community Pool as part of our Fix-the-Rec Initiative.

Looking ahead to 2024, we’re preparing for another 5K Fun Run, a Casino Night fundraiser, and another once-in-a-lifetime event on September 21st, where we will celebrate 92124 day in San Diego.

This newsletter - 92124.NEWS - will continue in 2024 with expanded distribution, community engagement, and more articles from our community partners like YOU.

We want to hear from you!

President – Tierrasanta Foundation

We’re looking for submissions! We’ve made the process of submitting your stuff as easy as pie! Whether submitting a great photo or writing a short story, we need you to spread the word about your community, school, or organization. We know some great stories are just waiting to be told!

Finally, if you like the work we’ve been doing in the community, please consider a tax-deductible donation to support us. Donations and grants completely fund all our events, initiatives, and activities.

On behalf of our volunteer board of directors, thank you for partnering with the Tierrasanta Foundation. We love our Island in the Hills and are thankful to be a part of one of San Diego’s BEST communities.

Happy Holidays!

Tierrasanta Foundation 5K/Fun Run & Walk, or 2023 Monster Mash

It was a dark and stormy night….

Ok, maybe not stormy, but it was a dark and cold morning when Tierrasanta Foundation members and volunteers assembled to set up for the day’s event!  Within a couple of hours, Tierrasanta Community Park was invaded by ghouls and ghosts, vampires and zombies, goblins, and the cutest little tykes you have ever seen!  They were young and old, short and tall.  Some were fluffy or furry with four legs!  It was the Annual (after a 3-year hiatus) Tierrasanta Foundation 5K/Fun Run & Walk, or 2023 Monster Mash!!

Over 600 runners and walkers came out to enjoy an early morning walk or run down Clairemont Mesa Blvd. and through De Portola Campus.   Tierrasanta Foundation member Carmen Cruz helped everyone loosen up with a pre-race warmup while the CHHS Cheer Team urged them on.  Ms. Betsy Faust, a vocalist from San Diego, treated the crowd to the National Anthem, and the race was off!

After what seemed like no time at all, the top three male finishers were crossing the finish line!  Maxwell Colier, Jake Langenderfer and Kameran Neises all crossed in under 20 minutes!  The top female finishers, Mara Hunt, Lorena Pinon and Ashlyn Purvis all crossed in under 26 minutes!    Congratulations to them and to all who finished!  It was an exciting race for participants and viewers alike.

As the runners/walkers crossed the finish line, they headed in different directions.  Some were  off to browse the Vendor Booths, checking what each had to offer and sneaking a few “treats” they could enjoy guilt-free, after doing the 5K!  Some “over 21” finishers headed straight to the Beer Garden to swap course stories and enjoy a cold one!  The younger set was treated to a Trick or Treat Zone and the  “Kids Zone,” complete with a Bounce House, Face Painting, and a variety of fun activities.

After the Awards Ceremony, where each of the early finishers were publicly recognized, photographed, and given a coveted Tierrasanta 5K Medal, the Costume Contest took center stage.  Hundreds of registrants paraded before the stage as the judges tried to reach consensus!  The “best” of several categories received awards from donors throughout the San Diego area.

As the morning celebration came to an end and the runners/walkers headed home for a well- deserved rest, Tierrasanta Foundation members and their generous volunteers began the tear-down and clean-up process.  Nothing makes a job easier and more rewarding than seeing customers (neighbors) walk away with smiles!  Thank you, Tierrasanta, for making our “job” a fun one!

New Year Wellness Activities

Members Mee Kim and Gayle Stewart celebrate at the Tierrasanta Village 15th Anniversary Gala Dinner.

You’re invited to join village members for wellness activities in the new year!

Our members understand that the key to longevity is maintaining physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Therefore, every village event works to meet this goal.

  • Members take part in physical exercise activities daily, including strength and balance training, core work, Chair Yoga and Tai Chi.

  • Villagers enjoy a full social calendar to stay engaged and to reduce isolation. Members have opportunities to share a meal with friends, share a skill, volunteer or experience something new.

  • Educational opportunities help members to navigate healthy aging, find a new hobby, or learn a new skill.

Visit the Event Calendar page for a full listing of village activities. Join us for the Seabreeze Craft Chocolates Tour and Lunch outing on January 19th. Or, attend the Informational Happy Hour on January 17th to learn how Tierrasanta Village is redefining aging.

Events require registration due to capacity limits, so simply send a text or email to the Village Front Desk at 858-569-9119 or tierrasantavlg@gmail.com. Or, connect on Facebook @TierrasantaVillage.

Friends of Tierrasanta Canyons - New Year Resolution

Do you enjoy our canyons? Why not volunteer at least once in 2024 with the Friends of Tierrasanta Canyons? It’s a great way to meet your neighbors who restore our local habitat. For event details, send a request for the Friend’s monthly newsletter at friendsoftscanyons@gmail.com.

Our first event in 2024 will be held on January 13 from 8 to 11 am. Meet at the East Shepherd Canyon kiosk located in the southeast area of the Santo Road and Antigua Blvd intersection. Street parking available on Antigua Blvd, west of the intersection. Activities include search and removal of palm trees and litter pickup. Please RSVP by January 12 at friendsoftscanyons@gmail.com.

We ask for RSVPs to ensure we bring enough supplies. Volunteers are requested to wear long pants, long sleeves, hats, and closed toe footwear. We also recommend bringing work gloves and a refillable water bottle. The Friends will provide tools and water for refilling your water bottle. Masks are optional. If you are less than 18 years of age, an adult will need to sign the waiver form upon arrival. Community service documentation is available.

We greatly appreciate our new and continuing volunteers who help make the Friends such a strong group. Happy and healthy holidays to all!
