A newsletter for the Tierrasanta community

Welcome to the fourth edition of 92124.news newsletter, a.k.a. “92124.news”!

Our aim is to connect the Tierrasanta community in a new way while honoring our past with a mission inspired by the Tierra Times. We strive to Inform, Connect, & Engage the Tierrasanta community by featuring content submitted by its residents, community organizations, elected officials, schools, clubs, and other contributors who shape our Island in the Hills.

As we look ahead to the 2023/2024 period, we have several exciting projects in the pipeline that may interest our readers:

  1. Community Calendar: We have developed a comprehensive community calendar where you can find information about upcoming events in Tierrasanta. We are also working on enhancements that will provide useful insights about T-Town. Stay tuned for updates!

  2. 92124.news: If you're reading this, you're already on our website! 92124.news is your go-to source for updated information from community organizations. Here, you can find news about upcoming events, updates from elected officials, and articles of interest. If you have an article you'd like to submit for the next edition, please check out this link.

  3. Fix-the-Rec Tierrasanta: The Tierrasanta Foundation has collaborated with the City of San Diego and the staff at our Rec Center and Pool to bring in much-needed equipment for families and kids to enjoy. This initiative aims to foster community engagement. To learn more, visit our website.

  5. First-responder enhancement project: What began as a drought-tolerant/community enhancement project at Tierrasanta's Fire Station 39 has evolved into a larger initiative involving private funding to enhance four City properties. Our goal is to improve first-responder readiness while simultaneously implementing sustainable landscape improvements that reduce maintenance demands for fire crews. We achieve this by incorporating drought-tolerant native landscaping. For more information, please email president@tierrasantafoundation.org.

We are excited about the projects and initiatives lined up for the Tierrasanta community, and we encourage your active participation and support. Together, we can make Tierrasanta an even better place to live, work, and thrive.

Community Gathers to Celebrate 35th Annual Patriots Day Parade

The streets of Tierrasanta were once again filled with joy and patriotism as the local community gathered at Canyon Hills High School to celebrate the 35th annual Patriots Day Parade, kicking off this year’s Tierrafest. Residents of all ages gathered to participate in the highly anticipated annual event, eager to commemorate the nation’s history and demonstrate their community spirit.

The fun-filled parade showcased local bands and music groups, including the Canyon Hills High School Marching Band. Local merchants and community organizations, including the San Diego Cadet Corps Color Guard and the fifth and sixth graders of the San Diego Police Department’s School Safety Patrol Program, followed in the procession until the parade finished at Legacy Church. Attendees then enjoyed barbeque cuisine provided by local vendors.

Supervisor Joel Anderson, who represents Tierrasanta on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, stopped by the parade to award Certificates of Recognition to commend the participants’ patriotism and commitment to the Tierrasanta community.

“I am grateful to all the wonderful community organizations who partner together every year to make this special day happen for Tierrasanta,” Anderson stated. “The annual Patriots Day Parade is a fantastic way to unite the community of Tierrasanta and celebrate our nation’s history.”

“This has been a community event for years and it is great to see families come around and just celebrate the beautiful community that Tierrasanta is,” shared parade participant Kelle Higgins. “Community comes from patriotism… and this is generational, kids from different schools come together, it’s just [about] the togetherness.”

This 35-year-old popular tradition was once again successful in allowing community members to connect, share, and strengthen the neighborly bonds that make Tierrasanta such a special place to call home.

Do you know of an exceptional organization or individual serving the community of Tierrasanta? Request a Certificate of Recognition from Supervisor Anderson at supervisorjoelanderson.com/certificate.

Students of the Canyon Hills High School Marching Band were recognized by Supervisor Anderson’s team prior to their 2023 Patriots Day Parade performance.

Supervisor Anderson recognized the San Diego Cadet Corps Color Guard at the 2023 Patriots Day Parade.

A Message from Eastern Division, San Diego Police Department (SDPD)

Hello Tierrasanta! I'm Matthew Botkin, the service area Lieutenant for Eastern Division, San Diego Police Department (SDPD), which includes Tierrasanta. With 21 years of experience in SDPD, I've served in various roles and have a personal connection to Tierrasanta as it's where I first lived in California and began my policing career. I'm committed to maintaining Tierrasanta as one of the safest neighborhoods in San Diego, ensuring you can enjoy this great city without fear of crime or disorder.

While Tierrasanta is generally safe, we occasionally experience crimes like thefts from vehicles. To minimize these instances and their impact, I want to provide some advice specifically related to this issue. Here are a few important points:

  • Over 50% of crimes in Tierrasanta are property crimes, including burglary, vandalism, and theft.

  • Theft from vehicles is the most common type of property crime, with minor increases observed over the past three years.

  • These thefts involve items stolen from inside vehicles, as well as catalytic converters or license plates.

  • Taking preventive measures can significantly reduce the chances of becoming a victim.

Here are some steps to deter, detect, and defend against theft from vehicles:

  1. Always lock your vehicle doors, regardless of where you park. Making it difficult for criminals by taking away the path of least resistance is an effective deterrent. In 2023, over 80% of thefts from vehicles occurred when doors were not locked. Establish a routine of checking that both your home and car are securely locked.

  2. Avoid leaving any valuables in your car. If it's absolutely necessary to keep valuables in your vehicle while you're away, secure them in the trunk. Whether in the trunk or cabin, ensure they are not visible from outside.

  3. Park in well-lit areas or those equipped with security cameras. Both serve as deterrents, and security cameras can provide crucial leads if an incident occurs. If you install your own cameras, ensure they are positioned correctly to capture the intended areas and adjust the motion sensors if needed.

  4. Maintain accurate time and date settings on your cameras and familiarize yourself with accessing the system. This facilitates timely sharing of footage with investigators, greatly assisting their work.

  5. Take photographs of serial numbers, damage/wear, or any identifying marks on your valuable and unique items. Save these photos in a separate folder on your device and in the cloud to have a backup in case your device is stolen. In the event of a crime, these photos can aid officers and detectives in identifying stolen property and increasing the chances of recovery.

Stay tuned for future articles from me and your Community Resource Officer Salvador "Sal" Laureltorres. If you have any ideas or topics you'd like us to address, feel free to reach out and let us know.

Thank you for partnering with us to keep our amazing city safe. Now, go out there and enjoy it!

Until next time, stay safe!

When I say Super, you say star… Super “STAR” Super “STAR!”

I’d like to shine a light on some SUPERSTARS in the beautiful Tierrasanta community. My name is Katie P and I own Superstar Gymnastics and Dance. I’ve been teaching, running camps, birthday parties and private lessons for 20 years. I started as a gymnast growing up then embraced cheerleading and dance. When I chose a career path I decided to embrace those passions after completing my Theater Education degree. I have taught all over SD my favorite community is Tierrasanta. My favorite thing in my job is the light I’m about to shine on some special students who have become leaders/ teachers themselves.

Picture of Macy and I with her light shining bright

Macy Watson came into my life at age 4 she was my student at the Tierrasanta Rec in my Superstar classes. Her light was bright and she progressed quickly with her skill level. She became my demonstrator and as she grew older became my assistant teacher in all my classes ages 1-10. She continued to shine with her leadership skills and teaching. Now, I’m so proud to say she became the CAPTAIN of Varsity cheer as a freshman at Canyon Hills High School! Of course credit is due to her amazing mom Robin and cheer coach, Alicia Wood. It is so amazing to see her passion and skills shine so bright! I had a coach mentor me and it’s my favorite thing to do the same with my students.

Macy will be teaching with me over the summer in my gymnastics, dance and cheer CAMPS at the Rec center flier shown here there is still time to sign up!

This aspect of my job is my favorite, watching my students go out and shine bright in this world! I’m so grateful. Thank you to the hundreds of Superstar families that have made my life brighter. I hope I can continue to ignite that light in my students in this incredible community.

Thank you to all the SUPERSTAR families!

Fall 2023 Registration for AYSO Recreational League Soccer Now Open

Fall 2023 Registration is open for AYSO in Tierrasanta. This will be our 48th year in the community and we are looking forward to another great season. We have two great programs for parents to consider in Fall.

Our first is our Recreational Soccer Program for kids 3 years old to 15 years old. This program is designed to be Fun first, and Competitive second. Prices range from $130 - $190 depending on the age group. Details can be found at AYSO152.org.

Our Second Program is EPIC or Everyone Plays in our Community. This is for our kids that have mental or physical challenges and needed a little extra support. The EPIC is open to all ages from kids to adults. The price is $50. Details can be found at AYSO152.org.

Lastly, if parents still need some Summer Coverage, we have two Summer Camps July 10th - 14th and August 7th - 11th. All info can be found at the AYSO152.org website.

These programs are based on these six Core philosophies:

  • Everyone Plays®

Our program's goal is for kids to play soccer so we mandate that every player on every team must play at least 50% of every game. It’s no fun to spend the game on the bench…and that’s no way to learn soccer!

  • Balanced Teams

Each year we form new teams as evenly balanced as possible because it’s more fun and a better learning experience when teams of similar ability play. It allows for each player to gain the experience of a wide variety of teammates of different skill levels.

  • Open Registration

Our program is open to all children between 4 and 19 years of age who want to register and play soccer. Interest and enthusiasm are the only criteria for playing. There are no elimination try-outs and nobody gets cut.

  • Positive Coaching

Encouragement of player effort provides for greater enjoyment for the players and leads to better-skilled and better-motivated players. A coach can be one of the most influential people in a child’s life, so AYSO requires they create a positive experience for every boy and girl.

  • Good Sportsmanship

We strive to create a positive environment based on mutual respect rather than a win-at-all-costs attitude, and our program is designed to instill good sportsmanship in every facet of AYSO.

  • Player Development

We believe that all players should be able to develop their soccer skills and knowledge to the best of their abilities, both individually and as members of a team, in order to maximize their enjoyment of the game.

We hope to see you all out there!

A Loveliness of Ladybugs in the Gloom

Friends of Tierrasanta Canyons
Enjoy and support our canyons on July 8 and August 12.

What was the Loveliness of Ladybugs doing in our May cleanup? The ladybugs were helping us keep our open space plants healthy by eating aphids and other pests that damage plants. Although sunny weather is usually preferred, the overcast gloomy days were welcomed at the Friend’s May and June cleanups helping volunteers stay cool while they pulled French Broom, Bristly Ox Tongue, and Thistles.

On July 8, the Friends will work from 8 to 11 am in the North Rueda Canyon/Seda green belt corridor to remove invasive plants. Meet at the trailhead between the homes of 4474 Calle de Vida and 4494 Calle de Vida. RSVP by July 7 at friendsoftscanyons@gmail.com.

On Aug 12, we will work from 8 to 11 am in East Shepherd Canyon to continue removal of acacia. Meet at the kiosk located in East Shepherd canyon, southeast of the intersection at Antigua Blvd and Santo Road. Street parking available on Avenida Playa Veracruz and west of the intersection of Antigua Blvd and Santo Road. RSVP by August 10 at friendsoftscanyons@gmail.com.

We ask for RSVPs to ensure we bring enough supplies. Volunteers are requested to wear long pants, long sleeves, hats, and closed toe footwear. We also recommend bringing work gloves and a refillable water bottle. The Friends will provide tools and water for refilling your water bottle. Masks are optional. If you are less than 18 years of age, an adult will need to sign the waiver form upon arrival. Community service documentation is available. Next clean-ups will be on October 7 and November 11. There is no clean-up in September.

Tierrasanta M.A.D. Schedule

The Tierrasanta Maintenance Assessment District Advisory Group has set its calendar for the remainder of 2023.
We will be meeting at the Tierrasanta Public Library at 6:30 p.m.

The dates are as follows:
June 26
July 11
August bye
September 18
October 16
November 27
December 18
January 22

Tierrasanta residents with an interest in our medians, open space trees, joint use fields and trails will find these meetings to be a great way to connect with other like-minded community members. Additionally, the Open Space Division of Parks and Recreation usually has a representative at these meetings to help field community concerns and ideas.

We will be entering the 2024 fiscal year next month. The advisory group invites input into how our combined state, city and local tax dollars are allocated. Residents interested in participating in these discussions should plan on attending our next several meetings.

The Open Space Division manages two contracts that address most all of our needs. Treebeard maintains medians, joint use fields, sidewalks, gutters, brow ditches, trails and Dishwasher Pond. West Coast Arborists maintains street and open space trees. Did you know that we have about 7000 trees included in our tree inventory? Each one is mapped, assigned a dollar value, and scheduled for regular trimming. The cycle for tree maintenance is about every three years.

The success of this work often depends on the reports and requests received from Tierrasanta residents. There are a couple of ways to contact the MAD for assistance. The Get it Done App can be used, especially if you are uncertain as to which department to contact for services. The request will be quickly routed back to the MAD as needs be.

You can also reach out to our Open Space Inspector, Laura Gardner. Her email is: LGardner@sandiego.gov. A third way is to contact Jennifer Schultz, the advisory group chair. She can be reached at jen.schultz702@gmail.com.

Have a great summer! Just remember that the rattle snakes are out there! Keep yourself, the children and your pets out of the bushes and tall grass!

We anticipate that the Amateur Division competition will be completed by 1 PM and the Open by 3 PM

Canyon Hills Students Work to Help Teenagers and Parents Communicate

What I Wish My Parents Knew - High School Students Build Family Communication Skills

“There’s no such thing as a perfect kid - they just don’t exist,” said Benita Page. “We put a lot of unnecessary pressure and stress on our kids and they, in turn, put it on themselves.”

Page is with San Diego’s Tariq Khamisa Foundation. She was a featured speaker at What I Wish My Parents Knew, a virtual forum held earlier this semester for teenagers and parents.

Students from Canyon Hills helped organize and moderate the forum. First, they did a survey of more than one hundred of their classmates, asking “What’s the hardest topic to talk to your parents about?”

The most popular answer was that most students feel comfortable talking with their parents about everything. One out of three students felt that way.

“When I talk to my parents, I know it’s confidential,” eleventh-grader Kyle Estep explained. “I couldn’t say the same if I talked with other students.”

More than one-fourth of students said their own mental health was the most challenging topic, according to Senior Nick Alcorn.

“Students don’t want to say they feel sad,” Alcorn said. “Their parents expect them to be happy and successful, and they don’t want to let their parents down. Conversations about mental health do not happen when teenagers don’t think they are going to be heard.”

Only 3 percent of the students said it was hard to talk to their parents about drugs and alcohol. For those few, however, it was significant. One wrote, “They misunderstand everything. They get upset that I asked, and they will think I do drugs.”

“Parents are the number one influence in their child’s life related to their attitudes and behaviors around alcohol,” said Via Perlas.

Estep stressed the importance of having those conversations. “Talking about alcohol and drugs might be uncomfortable for parents, but research shows their kids listen, and these conversations have a lasting impact.”

Lincoln High School Student Naveah Capell said sometimes, parents can misunderstand a conversation. “When I’m trying to express how I feel they don’t think like I’m doing it the right way,” Capell said. “Because you’re talking back, they put that in the category of you being disrespectful.”

“Parents read stuff online and assume it’s right,” Capell said. “It is easier to ask other adults, and they don’t want to have that awkward conversation. I get it. But when they assume stuff, it doesn’t make good communication between the parent and teenager.”

“We say that our clients are the expert on their lives,” said Yasmeen Elbana, a counselor with the North Central Teen Recovery Center. “Parents bring wisdom and have guidance to offer, but the kids are the experts on their feelings and what they are going through. Instead of looking for a solution, kids often just need their parents to listen and try to understand what is going on.

News From the Marks’ in Tierrasanta

Hi neighbors -

This year for the first time in a long time we saw our lovely hummingbirds disappear.  Thought it was something we did but reading the neighbor’s notes I was not unique.

But now, I noticed that many of our friends are coming to entertain us - We’re up to 6 or 7 today.  Hope you’re seeing them as well.  Get your feeders ready, and make sure they’re clean!
