92124.news – Your community newsletter – final issue deadlines for articles – December 5th

We want to hear from you! You might have a story to tell about life in Tierrasanta. History? The Trails? Upcoming events? Let us know!

We’ve made it easier than ever to submit an article of interest with pictures you can easily upload to our updated submission site. It’s a piece of cake! Hmm? Perhaps someone can tell us what that means?

Thanks to a generous grant from County Supervisor Joel Anderson, which helps to fund this newsletter.

Plan to get your December articles and photos in for the final prose for the last 2023 edition.

Visit www.tierrasantafoundation.org/newsletter to submit by December 5th. Articles and images with headings will be reviewed for placement on December 12th.

Tierrasanta Foundation’s New Article Submission Process

We're thrilled to announce an improved process for submitting articles and advertisements for our bi-monthly newsletter. This enhancement is designed to enhance efficiency and centralize all submissions in one convenient location. Instead of sending your articles via email, we kindly request that you utilize our dedicated submission form, which can be accessed on our newsletter page. This streamlined process involves a simple copy-and-paste of your article text, allowing you to include any necessary supporting images or PDFs. Please keep in mind that articles should not exceed 400 words.

For businesses interested in advertising, the same form can be used. However, we kindly request that you also purchase your advertising space for a nominal fee of $25 in our store. Your support is greatly appreciated, and we eagerly anticipate receiving your contributions for the upcoming December issue through our new submission platform.

Thank you for being part of our community and for your continued support!

Tierrasanta Junior Women’s Club (TJWC)

Another successful Oktoberfest, sponsored by the Tierrasanta Junior Women’s Club (TJWC) and the Kiwanis Club of Tierrasanta is in the books!  On October 14th, the campus of Tierrasanta Lutheran Church was transformed into a community hotspot featuring an authentic German Dinner of Bratwurst and Sauerkraut, entertainment by Barry Farrar,  a Fun Zone with games hosted by Tierrasanta non-profits and, for the over twenty-one crowd, a biergarten featuring German selections.  Of course, a Tierrasanta tradition, the Fireworks Display, was the highlight for many of our guests and they were not disappointed.

This is the final fundraiser of the year for the TJWC and the members were out in force to make sure everything went as smoothly as possible with several ladies on-site from morning ‘til clean-up.

The Tierrasanta Junior Women’s Club is a social and philanthropic organization of women of all ages with different backgrounds and experiences.  We provide a casual and relaxed meeting atmosphere and each member is important and all opinions count.  For additional information, please visit www.tierrasantajuniorwomens.org

Tierrasanta “Monster Mash” 5K & Fun Run – October 28th

On your mark! Get set! Boo!

After a 4-year hiatus, the Tierrasanta 5K & Fun Run is back and better than ever, with a Halloween flair!

The race/run/walk occurs at the Tierrasanta Recreation Center, with the chipped time race starting promptly at 8:30 AM, Saturday, October 28th, followed by the Fun Run, where runners, walkers, pups, and children in costumes will take to the streets.

Following the race and run, the fun kicks in with fun for the kids, pizza from Long Island Mike’s, and a beer garden, where registered participants will enjoy beer provided through donations from our business community.

Tierrasanta Foundation’s “Fix the Rec”

Tierrasanta is fortunate to have both a large Recreation Center and outstanding Community Pool. The Rec Center in particular attracts a large cross section of Tierrasanta – basketball, football, baseball, soccer and volleyball for kids and teens, dance and Mah Jong for the adults. As the pool and the Rec Center have aged, the Tierrasanta Foundation announced an initiative (“Fix the Rec”) to invest in these facilities. With financial support from the County of San Diego via a Community Enhancement grant, fundraising (the upcoming “Monster Mash” 5k on October 28), and private sources, we have identified a number of targeted improvements.

Tierrasanta Foundation President TK Keliinoi presents a check for the new backboards to Marcia McDowell (OCA Recreation Center Director III) and Angela Bremseth from the Tierrasanta Rec Center.

After announcing “Fix the Rec” in March, we invested $7,000 in new equipment for the Tierrasanta Pool. A set of new chairs and umbrellas were installed early in the summer months.  In September, the Foundation worked with the City Parks and Rec department to purchase a set of new basketball backboards for the indoor gym. At a cost of nearly $8,000, these new backboards represent a significant enhancement in the heavily-used gym.  In the coming months, we hope to expand the Fix the Rec program, working with the staff and management at the Pool and the Rec Center to identify needs and opportunities for further improvements. If you have any thoughts or would like to contribute to this effort, please contact Arne Knudsen at aknudsen@tierrasantafoundation.org.

Friends of Tierrasanta Canyons - Working out in East Shepherd Canyon

Friends working out to remove invasives on Nov 11 and Dec 9

On October 7, the Friends took out over 500 lbs. of creeping myoporum and eucalyptus saplings in East Shepherd Canyon.  It’s a great workout.  If you’re looking to get a start on maintaining your health before the holidays, join us for a true functional fitness workout.

On November 11, we will work from 8 to 11 am in North Shepherd Canyon to remove eucalyptus saplings and other invasive plants.  Meet and park at the trailhead on Villarrica Way.  From Santo Road, go east on Portobelo Drive, then right on Villarrica Way.  RSVP by November 10 at friendsoftscanyons@gmail.com.

We ask for RSVPs to ensure we bring enough supplies.   Volunteers are requested to wear long pants, long sleeves, hats, and closed toe footwear.  We also recommend bringing work gloves and a refillable water bottle.  The Friends will provide tools and water for refilling your water bottle.  Masks are optional.  If you are less than 18 years of age, an adult will need to sign the waiver form upon arrival.  Community service documentation is available.   Next clean-up will be on December 9 in the same location as the  November 11 event.

Thank you to Girl Scout Troop 4362 for their Leave No Trace poster which can be found on the kiosk in East Shepherd Canyon.  Also on the kiosk this month are Bat information provided last year by Girl Scout Troop 4851.

What To Do In An Emergency

Taking simple steps to Prepare

You might have noticed a lot of things going on these days including wars, disasters, outrage, and road rage to name a few. What can our community-members do to prepare without getting carried away?

First and foremost, if you are an adult in the household you need to prepare.

When YOU have accepted responsibility to take action to prepare… please read on.

For today’s article, let’s discuss one piece of the preparation, a Plan.

Prepare a Plan – Each of us should have a plan that helps the family prepare and respond to different emergencies that you can expect to happen in and around Tierrasanta. This is a plan with multiple pieces because each emergency needs a bit different approach.

For example, the plan for earthquake preparedness and response should be:

  1. Prepare your home, friends, and family to prevent injury during a catastrophic earthquake. The best info is at: https://www.earthquakecountry.org/sevensteps/   Yes there are 7 steps. One is:

  2. Train your loved ones to properly react in a catastrophic earthquake.

FEMA and all credible earthquake experts are encouraging all individuals, families and businesses to be aware of the Great ShakeOut, the world’s largest earthquake drill.  It is held annually on the third Thursday of October so we just missed it but YOU can do it any time even today.  In this self-led exercise, participants physically practice the “Drop, Cover, Hold On” procedure for earthquake safety.  This year’s event falls on Thursday, Oct, 19.  Again, you can do it any time because you do it yourself. For a great video go here https://www.shakeout.org/california/

    Previously-recommended earthquake procedures have changed.

Previously advised earthquake methods including standing in a doorway or running outside are now considered dangerous and are no longer recommended.  FEMA and all credible earthquake experts now recommends following these steps in the event of an earthquake:

    3.  DROP where you are, onto your hands and knees. This position protects you from being knocked over while the ground is shaking.

a.     Do not try to move more than five to seven feet before getting on the ground.

b.     If you are indoors, do not go outside or under a doorway.

c.      COVER your head and neck with one arm and hand, then:

d.     Crawl underneath a nearby sturdy desk or table.

e.     If no shelter is nearby, crawl next to an interior wall (away from windows, hanging objects, tall furniture and large appliances).

f.      Stay bent over to protect vital organs.

g.     HOLD ON to the desk or table with your free hand until shaking stops.

h.     Be ready to move with your shelter if it shifts.

There is no financial cost to help your friends and family protect themselves in a catastrophic earthquake that happens in Tierrasanta about every 150 years. There is minimal cost to prepare for this earthquake in your home. There could be a big personal impact if we don’t.

Please join others in Tierrasanta to strengthen the preparedness of our community.

Tierrasanta Disaster Communications Team Lead
