The Tierrasanta Foundation is committed to promoting the general welfare and quality of life for everyone in Tierrasanta. Through a variety of community events, we raise funds and reinvest them into initiatives that enhance our neighborhood.

One of our key projects is the Fire Station Initiative, which began in 2018 with a focus on revitalizing the landscape at San Diego Fire Station 39 on La Cuenta Drive. Years of state-imposed water restrictions and city budget cuts left Station 39 with the most neglected landscaping on the street—and no maintenance support beyond the fire crew themselves, who were tasked with upkeep despite having no irrigation.

Recognizing the importance of showing appreciation for our first responders and creating a welcoming environment, the Foundation took action. We partnered with the City of San Diego and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, developed a drought-tolerant landscape design, obtained the necessary Right of Entry permits, and covered the insurance costs required to complete the project.

Thanks to the donated talents of Andrea Sills Landscape Design and the labor of Joel Nealon of Nealon Landscape, the new landscaping was completed in 2019—and the transformation was dramatic. Since then, word has spread across the fire-rescue community. Inspired by our success at Station 39, similar efforts have taken root elsewhere in San Diego.

Ultimately, our long-term goal is to replace the outdated Station 39 facility entirely. Currently, not all crew members can be housed under one roof—ambulance personnel live in a trailer behind the station. In addition, workout equipment is crammed into the truck garage, exposing crews to carcinogenic fumes. These are unacceptable conditions for our first responders.
