A newsletter for the Tierrasanta community

February 28th, 2023

92124.News – A new way to stay connected, Tierrasanta!

Welcome to the 2nd edition of our Newsletter. The Tierrasanta Foundation launched this Newsletter in December 2022 following the loss of our beloved TierraTimes.

Throughout the past 43 years, the TierraTimes has connected us with community happenings. With this new digital format, our goal for 2023 is to build a community platform to connect, communicate, and celebrate everything remarkable about The Island in the Hills.

Please share and ask others to sign up for our free Newsletter. You can check out our 2023 publishing schedule on our site. We also have shared information on how to submit an article for consideration. Businesses and elected leaders are encouraged to stay connected.

Supervisor Anderson Introduces Himself to the Tierrasanta Community

Hello, Tierrasanta! I am Supervisor Joel Anderson, your elected representative for the County of San Diego’s Second District. I wanted to take this opportunity to properly introduce myself seeing that, due to recent redistricting, my district now encompasses the Tierrasanta community. I am honored to represent you and your families on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.

Throughout this past year, I’ve had the privilege of meeting many of you through community group meetings and memorable events in the beautiful “Island in the Hills.” Thank you for welcoming me and my office with open arms.

As your County Supervisor, my ultimate goal is to make county government work for you. The County plays an important role in your community, including providing housing, rental, food and medical assistance, veteran and family services, emergency safety resources, and much more.

Here is a snapshot of what my office can do for you:

For assistance with county services, contacting a county department, or inquiring about county policy areas such as attainable housing, public safety, and economic development, go to supervisorjoelanderson.com/contact. Complete the Share Your Opinion form to ensure you receive a timely response.

Certificates of Recognition

I believe it's important to recognize exceptional individuals, groups, and businesses playing an active role in their community. I am always looking to award those making a difference with Certificates of Recognition. In fact, I was delighted to commend participants at last year’s Tierrsanata Patriot’s Day Parade with personalized certificates of recognition. You can request a certificate at supervisorjoelanderson.com/certificate.

County Grants

The County has multiple ongoing grant programs to support organizations, small businesses, and community projects. Last October, I gladly facilitated the allocation of $20,000 in County grant funding to the Kiwanis Club of Tierrasanta, in support of the community’s annual Oktoberfest and Tierrafest.

Fall Season Officially comes to a close for AYSO Tierrasanta

The Fall season that started in August with 474 kids and 46 teams officially came to a close this weekend. Our last two All Star teams competed in the Section 11 All Star Tournament against the best kids from San Diego, Orange County and Riverside. The girls U10 and boys Under 12 each played their hearts out and represented Tierrasanta proudly. While they did not win, they each had a great time and experience.

2022 was a great season for AYSO in Tierrasanta. We saw tons of new kids join the league along with many new and enthusiastic coaches and referees. As a volunteer organization, we couldn't have had such a great season without the parents, guardians, and volunteers that give so much to support these kids. We thank you for your support!

As we head into 2023 we do have a Spring Academy coming up in March. This weekly program is a great way for returning players to grow their skills and for new players to learn the fundamentals of soccer. We also have Soccer Camps over Spring Break and during the Summer. If you are interested, you can find more information at AYSO152.org.

While the Fall Season is a ways off, if anyone is looking to get involved with the AYSO Board, Coaching, or Refereeing, please reach out to us at commissioner@ayso152.org. We have training events coming up that would like to get involved. We would also love to have your input on the season ahead.

Thanks for your continued support!

The Latest from Hancock Elementary

The fall season brought students to assemble for flag assemblies at Hancock Elementary. Teachers awarded a couple students from their class to receive an award for their academic achievements or good citizen characteristics. One of the November assemblies brought some extra excitement as students found Principal Hightower not on the ground where she usually stands but instead, they found her on top of the main office building. She announced the award recipients from the rooftop as students were handed their certificates by Associate Principal Salas. The assembly ended with a student from each class spraying silly string on Associate Principal Salas. The students made these two activities possible because they surpassed their fundraising goals from the Monster Dash.

The winter season brought more volunteers back to Hancock. More and more volunteers are filling out volunteer applications to help support school activities and field trips. Hancock also had volunteers help plant two pear trees, a nectarine tree, a cherry tree, and a fig tree from SDG&E Sustainable Tree Program. The trees look healthy, and our Hancock students and families are excited to watch them grow. Our local Tierrasanta ACE Hardware store generously donated 4 shovels and several bags of potting soil for our volunteers to use for the trees and other planting in the future. It was a great day to plant trees and hope to sign up even more volunteers in March for another Garden Day. Sometimes parents are not able to volunteer Monday through Friday but can volunteer on a Saturday. These garden activities or other volunteer activities that fall on a Saturday are perfect for parents who can only volunteer on the weekends. If parents are interested in volunteering with the garden, field trips, or other activities at Hancock, they are encouraged to fill out a volunteer application and show current TB test result.

Hancock has recently become a Community based school. Throughout the fall and winter season Abigail Avila has been promoting family and community involvement by encouraging them to Be the Voice of the Community through the Hancock Heroes campaign. Since Becoming a Community School, Hancock has already funded teacher specific “After School Tutoring Club”, held two different Flu Vaccine Clinics with Balboa Navy Medical, held STEP (Support the Enlisted Project) Food Drive, provided in-School Mental Health Support for students, hired “extra” Noon Supervision for UTK recess and purchased “I-Ready” program. They have even more activities in the works and will continue to listen to the Hancock Hero voices.

Join us for "Fiddler on the Roof Jr." presented by the students of De Portola Middle School on March 17 & 18!

By DPMS Theater

In March, De Portola students will be performing the musical "Fiddler on the Roof Jr." right here in Tierrasanta at Weiner Hall on the De Portola Middle School campus. A dedicated cast and crew of talented middle schoolers have been working hard for months, learning about the world of theater, from memorizing lines, singing solo and in a group, to stage choreography. A BIG THANKS to the stage directors, Courtney Caballero and Geneva McElwaine-Leto, who put this production together during after-school hours to allow the students the opportunity to gain knowledge, skills, and experience the joy of performing arts.

Story background: Set in the village of Anatevka, Russia, in the early 1900s, "Fiddler on the Roof Jr." tells the story of a dairyman named Tevye and his five daughters. Tevye is well-respected in the village and is steadfast in his belief in the importance of tradition and embracing his Jewish heritage. But when it comes time for his daughters to be married, his expectations are dashed by his daughters' insistence on marrying for love. Simmering beneath this light-hearted story, however, is the unrest of the outside world encroaching on the village. Sofia Dickman, who plays Tevye's oldest daughter, Tzeitel, explains that "it's a story about family," one that "is struggling to follow their traditions." She says that her character, for example, "is matched to marry a butcher, but instead wants to marry her childhood friend who she loves." Join us for the performance, and find out what happens!

Part comedy, part drama, part musical, this play has something for everyone. The students can't wait to show you their stuff! Ethan Wolfskill, who plays Motel, says that his favorite song is "L'Chaim," Hebrew for "To Life!" He describes it as a "fun, upbeat, party song!" Join us and be part of the fun! Mark your calendars: Performances are on Friday March 17 at 7-8:30 pm and Saturday March 18 at 2-3:30 pm inside Weiner Hall at De Portola Middle School (11010 Clairemont Mesa Blvd.). Tickets start at $5 per person at the door. Concessions will be available. Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Tierrasanta Open Space Committee sets $1.5 million budget for FY 2023

How many of us are aware that Tierrasanta was one of the first “planned” communities to be built in the state of California back in 1971? Part of that development was the establishment of San Diego’s first Maintenance Assessment District, or MAD for short. Tierrasanta residents bill themselves a small fee each year through our annual property tax assessments. The money is used to maintain our school fields, medians, parks, open spaces, trees and trails. An advisory group, also known as the Open Space Committee, manages these fees with the assistance of the Parks and Recreation Department.

Our MAD budget for Fiscal Year 2024 includes funding from a variety of sources to include our annual district assessment of $879,661 and $388,083 from the General Fund. The total revenue for 2024 is expected to be $1,431,633. Fees were increased by 6.35% over the previous year due to the consumer price index.

Our two largest expenditures include Landscape Services for $815,193, and Tree Services for $325,000. Utility costs are budgeted for $274,686; Administrative costs are budgeted for $280,134.

Unaudited “actuals” for 2022 stand at $1,390,148. The adopted budget for that year was $1,600,316. The adopted budget for 2023 was $,1,591,454.

Our new chair is Jennifer Schultz. Laura Gardner replaces Loren Boerboom as our new open space inspector. Her email is LAGardner@sandiego.gov. You may email her with any concerns you have regarding the condition of trees on public property, school fields, irrigation in the medians, etc.

The Open Space Committee meets regularly at the Tierrasanta Public Library. Community attendance and input is encouraged. We hope to see you there!

Wildlife in Tierrasanta

By Frank Tepedino

Most folks who live in Tierrasanta are aware of the wide variety of small wildlife living in the area. Here is a note of a an unusual occurrence.

Those of us who were living here a number of years ago can remember the wildfires that affected our neighborhood and destroyed a number of homes. During that major wild fire at about 4 AM, one dark morning, I was returning from my early morning swim at my health club. I was serenely driving East on Clairemont Mesa Blvd and approaching Repecho Drive. Suddenly and without warning, out of the dark, a deer appeared in my car's headlights running from left to right. He crashed into my car's left front fender .

I instantly hit the car's breaks and shuddered to a stop.

Then looking into my rear view mirror I saw the deer arise. He shook his head, probably said some bad words about me and California drivers, and then run off seemingly not seriously injured. No so my car, which had to be towed to a repair shop.

Score one for the deer and the Tierrasanta wildlife.
